Rep. Arrington Statement on H.J.Res. 45

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Jodey Arrington (TX-19) released the following statement on H.J.Res. 45, a joint resolution that would nullify the rule issued by the Department of Education that suspends federal student loan payments and discharges debt.

“President Biden’s regressive student loan debt bailout is cruelly unfair—to the people who couldn’t afford to go to college, the taxpayers who will shoulder the burden, and the students who worked their way through school. Republicans eliminated this subsidy in the Limit, Save, Grow Act, and the President ought to abandon this misguided policy as we continue to negotiate," said Rep. Arrington.

Background

  • The Biden Administration is claiming authority to transfer billions of dollars to the taxpayer through national emergency status from COVID-19 and the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003, meant to provide temporary relief to military members during deployment following 9/11.
  • This Joint Resolution would revoke the authority the Administration claimed it had to forgive loans.
  • Rep. Arrington was a sponsor of the Limit, Save, Grow Act, which will stop Biden’s student loan giveaway to the wealthy.
