Arrington Calls on Congress to Bring Down Costs of Prescription Drugs

Congressman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) released the following statement after the House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on the rising costs of prescription drugs. At the hearing, Congressman Arrington called on Congress to develop solutions that would bring drug costs down, while allowing for breakthroughs in life saving medicines. “Members on both sides of the aisle agree that the rising costs of prescription drugs is unsustainable and unaffordable. With one in four people taking prescription drugs having trouble affording their medication, lawmakers must work together to promote competition among drug manufacturers and transparency in pricing to empower patients, both of which will bring down the costs of prescription drugs” said Arrington. “We also need to ensure that the money our country spends on healthcare strikes the right balance between competition and innovation, providing the best value for the American people. As Vice-Chancellor of Research and Technology Commercialization at Texas Tech University, I saw firsthand the impact America’s innovators had on enhancing health, lengthening life, and reducing illnesses and disabilities for millions of people.” “Before we leap to government-controlled, centralized-planning solutions that would quench innovation, reduce consumer choices, and limit access to quality care, we need to find ways to maximize markets forces and limit unnecessary government innovation so we can lower drug prices without forfeiting breakthroughs in life-saving medicines.”
