Arrington Statement on Trump Administration’s Phase One Trade Deal with China
Washington, DC,
December 13, 2019
Today, Congressman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) released the following statement after the Trump Administration’s announcement of a Phase One trade deal with China:
“For decades, policy makers have acquiesced to Communist China and allowed them to steal our intellectual property, manipulate their currency, and engage in unfair and unseemly practices that have shuttered American factories and devastated agriculture producers in our nation’s heartland. Thanks to the persistent and diligent work of President Trump and Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, the United States is saying ‘no more’ to China’s economic abuses and delivering a much-needed reset with a nation that for too long has taken our farmers, manufacturers, and businesses for a ride,” said Arrington.
“I applaud the President and Ambassador Lighthizer for striking this hard-fought deal and delivering a much-needed victory for our farmers and ranchers in West Texas and across America.”
China has committed to buying an additional $200 billion on top of the traditional baseline of U.S. exports to China. The United States will be maintaining 25% tariffs on approximately $250 billion worth of Chinese imports, along with 7.5% tariffs on approximately $120 billion of Chinese imports. Phase 2 negotiations are expected to commence immediately.
