Progress: Congressman Arrington champions 'sword and shovel' leadership
Washington, DC,

Closing out the past year with a strong Farm Bill was a great way to cap a very productive first term in Congress.
In addition to passing historic tax cuts and regulatory relief and making the largest investment in our military in over a decade, we were able to achieve a number of big wins for West Texas, including restoring cotton to the Farm Bill safety net and securing Dyess as a base for the next generation bomber.
Now that Republicans are in the minority under the House leadership of Nancy Pelosi, our first priority is to defend the pro-growth policies we put in place as well as our core principles of free markets, less government, and a strong defense.
With the specter of failed 20th century socialist policies being advanced by the Democratic Party, we must remain vigilant to ensure that the future of our great nation belongs to freedom, not unfettered government control over our lives.
Proposals such as the Green New Deal and socialized medicine would not only crush our economy and bankrupt our country, but they would quench the American spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship and hard work.
Our economic prowess and the opportunities it affords our citizens was part of “the American Experiment (not accident!) in liberty. This free exchange of goods and services in an open market has created more jobs and lifted more people out of poverty than any government program ever could, no matter how well-intended.
However, in addition to defending our conservative values, we also must look for opportunities to find common ground and forge bipartisan solutions to some of the biggest problems facing our country.
There are areas where I believe we can make real progress including improved access to basic care for rural communities, updated infrastructure to encourage continued economic growth, and reduced costs of prescription drugs.
I believe our country needs “sword and shovel” leaders who will fight for their principles while working to build consensus when possible. That’s how I represented you in my first term and that’s how I plan on leading in my second term.
I will continue to be guided by the Constitution, my constituents and my conscience. I’m proud to be a West Texan and I’m grateful for the privilege of representing the hardest -working, God-fearing people in all the land.
