WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Jodey Arrington (TX-19) introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would require Congress to call an Article V Convention of the States to propose a fiscal responsibility amendment to the United States Constitution. “After a short time in Washington, it is abundantly clear that Congress completely lacks the political will to control our finances, which is why I introduced legislation to force Congress to rein in spending and restore fiscal sanity to our nation’s capital,” Rep. Arrington said. “I hope my colleagues will join me in encouraging states to exercise their constitutional right to put a check on the unbridled spending of the federal government.” Background on the Legislation H. Con. Res. 101 would call for an Article V Convention of the States to propose a fiscal responsibility amendment to the U.S. Constitution, unless the Archivist determines that the two-thirds requirements for state applications to hold a Constitutional Convention has never been met. H.R. 8419, referred to as the Article V Accountability Act, would direct the Archivist of the United States to authenticate, count, and publish applications of states calling for a convention to propose amendments to the Constitution. The Archivist would notify Congress when the threshold for calling a convention has been satisfied, which would require Congress to establish a date and place for the Convention of the States. ### |
