Arrington Sends USMCA to House Floor, Applauds Efforts to Further Strengthen U.S. Trade
Washington, DC,
December 17, 2019
Today, Congressman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) voted to advance the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) out of the House Ways and Means Committee to the full House of Representatives for passage this week. Before the full Committee vote, Congressman Arrington spoke about the impact of the new agreement on establishing more fair and free trade deals for the United States with our partners around the globe:
“I want to thank my colleagues for the give and take, the push and pull, and the contributions of this committee to the point that we’re here today and ready to vote it out of Committee and onwards toward ratification,” said Arrington.
“I’m glad that we can all share in some contribution here, but the fact is, the heavy lifting was done by this president and our country is going to be better for it. This continues to build on America’s successes – there is a great awakening, there is a renaissance, and truly America is back like ever before and the best, I believe, is yet to be seen.”
“This is a template for expediting more comprehensive free trade agreements. This will strengthen our hand against China and trying to get resolution to a fair, balanced, and equitable trade relationship. This is significant in so many ways, not the least of which is the stability and certainty for more investment and more growth – not just in the United States, but in Mexico and Canada.”

During today’s Ways and Means Committee hearing, Congressman Arrington also spoke in support of H.Res. 746, and emphasized the importance of achieving a real reset with China on trade, which includes much-needed structural reforms at the World Trade Organization (WTO) so that West Texas and American producers can compete on a level playing field at the global level.
“We haven’t seen a politician, a political leader take on China like has been necessitated to get them to the table. We’re looking at $200 billion in purchases of American products, $80 billion to $100 billion in ag – that’s almost twice what they purchased before,” said Arrington.
“I’m more interested in the structural reforms, I hope we can make some headway there also. I think it’s both, and I applaud the President for having the political courage to withstand the incoming from a lot of interests around the country, and it’s real pain that’s being felt. I can attest that, especially with respect to my farmers in West Texas, they can’t sustain this for too long, so I hope we can hit reset in the near future and get on down the road.”
