Arrington Responds to Record-High Border Numbers: “You Get What You Encourage”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Jodey Arrington (TX-19) made the following statement in response to U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) release of September 2022 data:

“You get what you encourage, and the Biden Administration has continuously encouraged lawlessness in our communities, the empowerment and enrichment of cartels, and the deluge of crime and drugs pouring into our country. Biden has failed in his greatest responsibility of protecting the American people. Nothing short of our sovereign states exercising their constitutional right of self-defense will change this disastrous situation.” 

Background on CBP September 2022 Data reported by Fox News:

  • The number of illegal migrant encounters at the southern border climbed to a record high at 227,547 during the month of September.
  • There were more than 2.37 million encounters for Fiscal Year 2022, the highest fiscal year every recorded.
  • There were almost 600,000 known gotaways in Fiscal Year 2022.
  • There were 856 migrant deaths at the border in Fiscal Year 2022, the highest ever recorded. 
  • There were 20 known or suspected terrorists arrested at the southern border in September, bringing the total terror watchlist arrests at the border for the Fiscal Year 2022 to 98. That is nearly quadruple the previous five fiscal years combined.
  • September’s migrant encounters were a significant increase from the same month in recent years. There were 192,001 encounters in September 2021 and 57,674 in September 2020.
