Arrington Meets with President Trump on Term Limits

Today Congressman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) and a bipartisan group of new House members met with President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss term limits. Arrington has been a strong advocate for enacting term limits. He introduced a proposed constitutional amendment last year with Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA) that would limit the time Members of the Senate and Members of the House of Representatives serve to twelve years. This is the only term limits legislation jointly introduced by a Republican and Democrat. You can read the full text of the joint resolution here. “If we learned anything from the American people in the last election, it is that they are sick and tired of politics as usual and they are demanding we change the broken culture in Washington,”said Arrington. “The President remarked that we are passionate about term limits – it’s because we know this is a historic opportunity. It is the right time. We know how people feel on all points along the political spectrum. Our freshman class represents a new generation of policymakers in Washington who came here not just to move the furniture around, but to really change the game, fundamentally. We know that with this president’s support, we can get it done.” Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC), chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, attended the meeting this afternoon. “I’m grateful for the work of my colleague Jodey Arrington and the entire group of freshman members who attended the meeting. These are representatives truly committed to changing the way Washington does business, returning power to the people, and remembering their constituents back home above all else. I’m thrilled we were able to share some ideas with the President and his team on term limiting members of Congress, and I look forward to working with them in the future to see this initiative through.” Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), who joined Arrington in the meeting with President Trump said, “Our Founding Fathers never intended for service in Congress to be a lifelong career. I am proud that my friend and colleague Jodey Arrington has led the fight in Congress for enacting term limits. Thanks to Jodey’s leadership and other members of our freshman class, we directly appealed to President Trump about the vital need for term limits. We owe it to the American people to make a real, lasting difference in Washington. This fight is not possible without Jodey’s leadership.” For more information on term limits, you can read Congressman Arrington’s op-ed originally published in the Texas Tribune here.
