It was a packed auditorium Thursday morning at Big Spring High School to remember 21-year-old Robert Volker, better known as RJ.
RJ graduated from Big Spring in 2003 where he played the French horn.
Soon after, he followed his brother into service and joined the Army.
“RJ’s biggest thing was that he was helping a community. There was people over there that were crying out for help and needed something," Melissa said. “He felt it was the community he was trying to help, just like he would here in Big Spring.”
He was killed in Iraq in 2006.
Now these halls RJ used to walk in, will be filled with pictures and a flag to keep his memory alive.
Even Congressman Jodey Arrington made the trip down to Big Spring for the special ceremony.
The family was honored and touched by the outpouring of support from the community.
“We’ll never forget. You can’t forget something you always think about," Robert said. "We try to bring him to the forefront, so after we’re gone others will know about him and what he did for his community and for his country.”
