Washington, D.C. – Today, House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled on the Trump Administration's tariff authority:

I commend President Trump for his urgency and vigilance in establishing a level playing field for our farmers, manufacturers, and workers while also protecting our national security interests by strengthening our industrial base.

This Supreme Court case has never been about the merits of President Trump’s reciprocal trade policy or whether or not the President has the authority to use tariffs to promote fair trade and protect our national security interests. It’s always been about determining the right authority to achieve these outcomes.

To be clear, the President has the authority to enforce fair trade and use tariffs to protect America’s security interests under the Trade Act of 1974 and Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which have stood the test of time since his first term. The Administration has already begun the process of swiftly utilizing these authorities again to replace IEEPA and facilitate its successful trade agenda.

President Trump’s and Ambassador Greer’s hard-fought trade agreements have reduced our trade deficit, facilitated record exports, and quadrupled customs revenue. The agreements have strengthened both our nation’s economy and our future fiscal health. Congress should immediately codify the President’s reciprocal trade agreements, which would make these deals more durable, enforceable, and effective in the long run. If this can’t be done in a bipartisan fashion, Republicans should use reconciliation—the most potent legislative tool in our toolbox—to safeguard our economic and national security interests.” – Chairman Arrington.
