Rep. Arrington Blasts Biden’s Open Border Policies and Applauds South Texas Leaders for “Invasion” Declaration, Calls Them “Sanctuary Counties for US Citizens”

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Rep. Jodey Arrington (TX-19) issued the following statement in support of states exercising their Constitutional right to declare an invasion and secure their own borders when the federal government fails to do so. Elected officials in several counties in South Texas are set to declare the crisis at the southern border an “invasion” on Tuesday afternoon.

“I applaud the local leaders from South Texas for becoming “Sanctuary Counties for US Citizens” under invasion by drug cartels,” said Rep. Arrington.

“President Biden is derelict in his duty to enforce immigration laws, the Biden Administration has ceded control of our sovereign border to narco-terrorist drug cartels, and the federal government has completely abandoned its responsibility to protect the citizens and states along the southern border against an invasion.”

“I introduced H. J. Res. 50 with support from Representatives from over half the states in the country, which simply affirms Texas and every state’s constitutional power to repel an invasion, enforce the laws of the land, and protect its citizens and its sovereignty when the federal government fails to do so.”

“We have an unprecedented and unmitigated humanitarian, safety, and security crisis at our southern border, which has resulted in significant and widespread harm to our communities and death to tens of thousands of Americans.”

“This lawlessness and chaos are a direct result of President Biden’s open border policies and failure to comply with the law, the courts, and the Constitution.”

Background:

  • In June 2021, Rep. Arrington introduced H. J. Res. 50, a resolution affirming Article I Section 10 of the U.S. Constitution, which recognizes states’ sovereign power to defend themselves against invasion.
  • In an op-ed on the resolution carried by Fox in June 2021, Rep. Arrington said, “The Constitution also clearly states the federal government "shall protect each of [the states] against invasion." But ask anyone living in our border states and they’ll tell you: President Biden won’t even acknowledge the invasion, let alone take the steps necessary to protect them.”
  • 61 Members of Congress representing 26 states have sponsored Rep. Arrington’s H. J. Res. 50, demonstrating broad Congressional support for the concept of states’ sovereign right to repel an invasion and defend their citizenry from overwhelming and “imminent danger.”
