“I think there's cause for concern for this particular initiative by the federal government, which is part of a broader, land grab by the federal government - a stated goal by the Biden administration for the federal government to own 30 percent of land in our country.”

Background:

  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently finalized a plan that allows the agency to purchase private lands or acquire conservation easements from willing sellers on up to 700,000 acres in Texas and New Mexico. This is an effort to expand the effective conservation footprint of the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge.
  • The plan authorizes USFWS to purchase land or conservation easements from willing sellers within the project boundaries.
  • On July 1, 2024, Chairman Arrington sent a letter to the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service demanding answers on its efforts to expand the refuge through the acquisition of private land.
