ARN: Abilene-area congressmen praise Trump for working for Americans
Washington, DC,
January 30, 2018
The three congressman who represent portions of the Big Country weighed in President Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday night: U.S. Rep Jodey Arrington, 19th Congressional District: “President Trump is doing what the American people elected him to do: lead and put America first. Just one year into his presidency, we have seen illegal border crossings reach record lows, the stock market reach record highs, and a renewed sense of American strength and optimism. “Building on the economic momentum of 2017, President Trump laid out a bold vision that points to even better days ahead; a safer America as a result of strengthening our national security and securing our border, a stronger America as we expand trade and get people back to work and a freer America as we continue to unleash the limitless potential of our economy and the American people. “From passing historic tax reform to a sea change of conservative jurists, our unified Republican leadership is delivering on our promises and transferring power back to the people.” On Trump's remarks on defense, Arrington said: "“Unfortunately, the policies and posture of the previous administration left our defense arsenal dilapidated, our position in the world damaged, our allies doubtful, and our enemies determined. With President Trump’s leadership and commitment to rebuilding our military, America is no longer in the business of leading from behind. He understands how vital it is we invest in our defense and I proudly support his efforts. We must always ensure our men and women in uniform have the resources they need.” U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway, 11th Congressional District: "It was refreshing to hear President Trump's vision for a safe, strong, and proud America tonight. After eight long years under President Obama, we finally have a President who is working everyday for the American people. As we move forward as a nation, I'm eager to continue building on the success of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as we tackle immigration reform, infrastructure projects, and continue to preserve the America we know and love for generations to come." U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry, 13th Congressional District: “I think he ... tried to appeal to everyone in the room, talking about infrastructure, prison reform. I felt he was bending over backward to try to work together with everyone in the room.” Addressing Trump’s pillars of immigration, “Some of it is easier to achieve than others, widespread agreement that we need to be fair to the dreamers while at same time strengthen the border. That makes sense. “What I hope people heard, even if there is something you disagree with ... find something you can agree with so we can work together.” https://www.reporternews.com/story/news/local/big-country/2018/01/30/abilene-area-congressmen-praise-trump-working-americans/1078784001/ |
