Over a year ago, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put in place a plan that would increase the size of the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge by 100,000%.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump's Administration has put an end to that plan, and U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington is celebrating the decision.

"I'm proud to have led the fight to defend our tax dollars, private property rights, and way of life by advancing legislation to prohibit and defund this federal land grab," said Arrington, R-Lubbock. "I applaud the Trump Administration’s decision to withdraw the Biden Administration's unnecessary and overreaching expansion of federal lands."

Just last year, Arrington, who serves as chairman of the House Budget Committee, became vocal in criticizing the Biden Administration's plan to increase the current size of the refuge from 6,440 acres to 700,000 acres, with an Austin property rights organization — American Stewards of Liberty calling it a "Muleshoe Land Grab."

The Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1935 as a wintering and resting area for migrating waterfowl and is the oldest refuge in Texas, according to the city of Muleshoe. The refuge is located 20 miles south of Muleshoe on State Highway 214 in West Texas. The refuge is known in particular for its Sandhill cranes - which begin arriving in late September - along with other wildlife.

Arrington said that, at the time, he was concerned the plan would take cotton acres away from farmers and producers. He also cited some of his constituents' concerns about property values and taxes

Arrington was also joined in celebrating this win by U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, R-Arkansas, chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, and Margaret Byfield, executive director of American Stewards of Liberty.

"This announcement is an important step forward in overturning the radical policies of the Biden administration and ensuring we don’t take steps to dramatically expand the already bloated federal estate," said Rep. Westerman. "I’d like thank Rep. Arrington for his leadership in this matter and look forward to working with him to further advance the natural resources issues facing West Texas."

"We are thankful to President Trump and Secretary Burgum for rescinding this plan and rolling back another key component of the 30x30 agenda," said Byfield. "We are also thankful to Representative Arrington for his swift actions to ensure this plan was stopped. He has boldly protected the property rights of his constituents and stood squarely between Texans and the federal government.”
