Arrington Introduces Legislation to Ban Russian Oil & Unleash Domestic Energy Production

WASHINGTON, DC— Yesterday, Rep. Jodey C. Arrington (TX-19) led 10 of his colleagues in introducing H.R. 6947, the Freedom from Russian Energy Enterprise and Domestic Oil Maximization (FREEDOM) Act, to block Russian energy imports and unleash domestic oil and gas production.

The FREEDOM Act will:

  • Ban importation of all crude oil, petroleum, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas from the Russian Federation from 45 days after enactment.
  • Reauthorize construction and operation of the Keystone XL Pipeline.
  • Nullify President Biden’s Executive Order 14008 which paused oil and gas leases on public lands, re-entered the US into the Paris Climate Agreement, and discouraged federal investment in fossil fuel projects.

“While Biden announces his embargo on Russian energy imports, he continues his unilateral assault on US oil and gas and American energy independence. Banning foreign fossil fuel imports without reversing his policies hostile to domestic producers is an empty and expensive political gesture. Last night, I introduced the FREEDOM Act to impose a Russian import ban while simultaneously bolstering US production by reauthorizing the Keystone pipeline and nullifying Biden’s punitive climate Executive Orders. Blocking oil from nefarious nations while increasing domestic production is the only solution for American energy independence, and Biden should look no further than Texas energy to accomplish that goal.” –Rep. Jodey C. Arrington
